OTC Center for Workforce & Student Success
Springfield, MO
Serving as the only student amenity focused building on campus, this new facility houses 100,000 s.f. of various spaces aimed at improving the daily experience for a commuting student body. Spaces include a new food court, fitness center, book store, library, tutoring center, gaming area and multipurpose atrium.
Designed as the main student hub, the project concept quickly focused on drawing students into the facility. The building is located in the middle of campus for accessibility and the site design extends a main pedestrian corridor across the north elevation of the student union. Large expanses of glass help connect students walking through campus to interior activities and spaces and two rooftop patios also reinforce this idea. The south side of the facility overlooks an arterial roadway and includes a welcome center and bookstore entry point for campus visitors. The exterior of the facility is comprised of brick, glass and metal panels that relate to other materials present on campus. The exterior design emphasizes the fitness center track and atrium seating area on second floor by overhanging the first-floor plate with extrusions comprised of gray metal panels and curtain wall systems. The three-story facility is organized around two interior two-story volumes: a flexible multipurpose auditorium and a gymnasium space that each blend with program areas on the second level. The first two floors are planned as the loud and active student areas while the third floor houses the quieter tutoring center, library and campus training rooms.
